In 1970, the first fiber-optic cable was commercially produced by Corning Glass Works, Inc. The glass fiber-optic cables allowed more data to be transmitted through them faster than through wire or conventional cable. The same year, optical circuits were improved further by the development of the first semiconductor laser.
